The 10 Dating Sites
1. Match
As any guy who has visited Match.com looking for Mrs. Right or just Ms. Right Now can tell you, Match offers plenty of opportunities for men to meet great women, and it caters to the full spectrum of singles, regardless of how honest you want to be in your profile. I’m a pretty straightforward guy, so mine was upfront about my intentions, and it wasn’t hard to meet women I clicked with. But if you’re the kind of guy who is comfortable cyber-pretending you’re George Clooney, you’re likely to find success as well, regardless of how you define it.

2. Plenty Of Fish
Plenty of Fish runs the gamut in terms of what men could be after, and it’s definitely a legit site. Because it’s free, though, it lacks the quality of potential companions that a site like Match.com can offer. Because I tend toward the superficial side, I was disappointed by the relative lack of compatible matches on PoF. I was able to meet decent-looking women, but none whom I was into to the point of dating. That said, I know guys who have had legit success on PoF. And with pay-to-play seeming to be the standard format, PoF offers a good alternative to dudes who are looking for a hookup (or more) on the cheap.

3. Lavalife
I had high hopes for Lavalife, and I’m convinced that it could help the right dude land a decent hookup. The site has a unique format that allowed me to sift through profiles by theme, including “dating,” “relationships” or “intimate.” The problem for me was the volume of women in my area -- one fairly broad search revealed a single woman in my entire state, and her profile said she lives in Thailand. Lavalife apparently started as a Canadian site, and the number of potential scores north of the border leads me to believe that it still largely caters to our maple-leaf-flying brethren.

4. Craigslist
Welcome to the standard-bearer for free online horse trading. Whether you’re looking to dump the ring that you got back from your ex or looking to fill the empty side of your bed, there’s a list for that. Craigslist has been satisfying customers for over a decade with its straightforward platform, but its online hookup section is a study in Darwinism. It was entertaining to wade through some truly crazy sh*t before I found a woman who could pass for a 2:00 a.m. option. But I’m more into tits than tats, and I’m not after women who can bench press me, so count Craigslist as another service that left me wanting more.

5. Online Booty Call
The worst thing about Online Booty Call is that, long after failing to deliver the “Booty Call Only” that I specified upon signing up, the site still pops up on my phone when I open the internet. (Cyber STDs are not ideal when putting a number in your phone from an actual woman.) OBC does have a wide disparity in quality, so I can’t say definitively that you won’t strike gold with it if your idea of a jackpot is an encounter with the girl who ate the girl next door. But its pattern was familiar, and the number of legit responses I got from women I would consider being seen with in a dark theater was exactly zero.

6. Hot Or Not
At first blush, Hot or Not appeared to arrive on the scene as a new online take on the age-old shame game. It was nothing if not consistent, carrying its juvenile theme into its platform for initiating contact with women by activating my “Super Powers.” But even once I got past the child’s play, I was left disappointed. Sadly, the talent too often populated the “Not” column. There was also a strange trend of people from Indonesia wanting to meet me, as well as women who deleted their profiles shortly after viewing mine. It comes on the cheap, but I didn’t find enough traffic to justify the low price.

7. Adult Friend Finder
The filthiest on this list by far, Adult Friend Finder has nasty pictures and even nastier profiles. Its platform definitely screams hardcore, but its results left me soft. AFF keeps with the basic strategy of luring you in with suggestive photos and invitations to join from hot “women” who most likely don’t exist. AFF was much more circumspect in what it allowed without a subscription, though, so I have to take some blame for letting curiosity trump reason. An AFF subscription is the online hookup equivalent of buying a Breitling Navitimer from an online-only watch shop with a Chinese P.O. Box. I feel I only have myself to blame with this one.

8. Adult Match Doctor
I knew I was in for a ride when I read the disclaimer on Adult Match Doctor -- it stated that it doesn't screen any of its members and to proceed at my own risk. The need for a disclaimer was immediately evident when I received my first email from a lovely woman named Jennifer, who, among other things, told me she’s “just new in this site and i was trying to see what the site can brings to me and where it goes and i want to experience and to explore new things and i see your profile and its good and nice... i hope we can be more comfortable to each other.” Aside from that tempting offer, a separate search revealed that at one point the only person online in my entire state was a 35-year-old dude.

9. iHookup
When trolling Google Play for potential online fun, I came across this phony gem. It used the pretty standard business model of luring me in with immediate promises of no-strings-attached sex (that’s "NSA," for those new to online hookup parlance), only to have the lovely ladies who were so eager to flirt with me before I even had a picture posted disappear just as quickly once I signed up. The free version is fun for its abundance of hot suggestive photos, and the relatively cheap trial version will unlock some hardcore private albums, but those were small consolation given the ease with which I could have found way more of that content elsewhere on the internet for free.

10. Horny Matches
Within an hour of signing up, and before even posting a picture, I had an email from a woman with a very provocative photo. I'm usually wary when something seems so easy, so I sat on it for a day, during which time a second woman contacted me. My doubts persisted, but my curiosity got its way, and I signed on for the Gold membership. The emails stopped immediately and the only correspondences I received thereafter were shabbily written emails from "women" asking me to chat via Yahoo! Messenger. In the case of one “woman” whose phone number I asked for, I was told that her mom has her phone and that she could only chat with Yahoo! Messenger. That was when I knew the jig was up on HornyMatches.
